Customer Portal: Options for the 'Find Item' Search Field

On the 'shop catalog' page on the customer portal, the Find item search field is somewhat dynamic - meaning it starts searching as users put in search terms. However, if they enter more characters while the system is searching, the new characters are not retained. Is there a way to turn off the 'search as you type' functionality of this field and only execute the search when the user tabs out or hits the enter key? It would be great to have an actual 'submit' or 'perform search' button to the side of the field.
